Glossary of terms
Plain-language definitions of words frequently used in board policies, curriculum, and advocacy discussions.
Cisnormativity / Heteronormativity
The assumption that being cisgender (identifying with birth sex) or heterosexual is the default. Some equity frameworks treat these as systems that need to be “disrupted.”
GSA (Gender-Sexuality Alliance / Gay-Straight Alliance)
Student club focused on LGBTQ+ topics and support. Participation is usually voluntary, but activities and messaging can extend into the wider school.
Preferred name / preferred pronouns
The name or pronouns a student asks staff to use. Some board practices allow this change without parental notification or consent.

Social transition
Changing a child’s name, pronouns, clothing, or presentation to align with a gender identity different from their biological sex, without medical intervention. Often described as the first step in a gender-affirming pathway.
SOGI
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. Used in some Canadian jurisdictions to describe curriculum and professional development that includes these topics.
Equity vs equality
Equality treats people the same. Equity frameworks often allocate resources or visibility preferentially to groups identified as historically marginalized, which can result in unequal treatment of majority students.
School Council / SCC
Official advisory body at each school under Ontario Regulation 612/00. Majority parents. Can make recommendations to the principal and board.
Parent Involvement Committee (PIC)
Board-level advisory committee that advises the Director and trustees on parent engagement across the system.
SEAC
Special Education Advisory Committee — required by the Education Act. Advises the board on special education programs and services.
MFIPPA / FOI
Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The statute that lets you request board records. Application fee $5. Statute.
