Anonymized parent experiences

These composite examples are based on patterns commonly reported by Durham and Ontario parents. Names and identifying details have been removed. They are illustrative, not legal advice.

Example A — Late PPM 162 notice. A parent received a PPM 162 notice only five school days before the sexual-health unit began. They immediately emailed the principal citing the 20-day requirement, requested the exemption anyway, and copied the superintendent. The school provided alternative supervision and later improved its notice timing.

Example B — Preferred name without notification. A parent discovered through a report card that staff had been using a different first name and pronouns for several months. They requested a written explanation, asked that legal names be used in formal communications, and raised the issue at School Council.

Example C — School Council motion. Several parents coordinated to attend School Council and passed a motion requesting that curriculum outlines and identity-related guest speakers be posted at least two weeks in advance. The principal agreed to improve transparency for the rest of the year.

Outcomes vary. Persistent, polite, written documentation produces the best results.
